காயஸ்தர் (Kayastha) எனும் சமூகத்தினர் வட இந்தியாவில் வாழ்பவர்கள். இவர்களின் குலத்தொழில் அரசாங்கம் மற்றும் செல்வந்தர்களின் கணக்குகளை பராமரிப்பவர்கள் ஆவார். காயஸ்தர்கள் தங்களை எமலோகத்தில் மக்கள் செய்த பாவ-புண்ணியங்களை கணக்கிட்டு வைக்கும் சித்திரகுப்தனின் வழித்தோன்றல்கள் எனக்கூறிக்கொள்கின்றனர். பிரித்தானிய இந்தியாவில் காயஸ்தர்கள் கிராம வருவாயை கணக்கீடு செய்யும் கணக்காளர்களாக இருந்துள்ளனர். இவர்களைப் போன்றே வட தமிழ்நாட்டில் கருணீகர் எனும் சாதியினர் கிராமக் கணக்குகளை கையாளுபவராக இருந்தனர்.
காயஸ்தர்களில் மூன்று பிரிவின்ர் உண்டு. அவைகள்: வங்காள காயஸ்தர், சித்திரகுப்த வம்ச காயஸ்தர் மற்றும் சந்திரசேனியா காயஸ்த பிரபு ஆகும். வட இந்தியாவில் சித்திரகுப்தவம்ச காயஸ்தர்களும், மகாராட்டிராவில் சந்திரசேனியா காயஸ்த பிரபுகளுக்கும், மேற்கு வங்காளத்தில் வங்காள காயஸ்தர்களும் உள்ளனர். இக்குடியினர் ஆட்சியாளர்களின் அரசுக் கணக்குகள், கிராம நிலவரி கணக்குகள் எழுதி பராமரிப்பதில் வல்லவர்கள். கணக்கு எழுதும் தொழிலே தங்கள் குலத்தொழிலாக கொண்டவர்கள் காயஸ்த குடியினர்.[2][3]
சமூக நிலை
மேற்கு வங்காளத்தில் காயஸ்த சமூகத்தினர் அந்தணர்களுக்கு அடுத்த நிலையான சத்திரியர் படிநிலையில் உள்ளனர்.[4] வட இந்தியாவில் சித்திரகுப்த வம்ச காயஸ்தர்கள் அந்தணர் நிலையில் உள்ளனர்.[5][6][7][8]
