== சொற்பிறப்பு ==
பனாஜிகா என்றால் [[வணிகம்|வணிகன்]] என்று பொருளாகும். பனாஜிகா என்பது இடைக்கால பயன்பாட்டில் இருந்த சொற்களாலான பலஞ்சா, பனாஞ்சா, பளஞ்சா, பனஞ்சு, பளஞ்சியர் போன்ற சொற்களின் திரிபாகும். இவை அனைத்தும் வடமொழி சொல்லான வனிஜ் என்பதிலிருந்து பெறப்பட்டவையாகும்.<ref>
